Filter
  • CASE EXTTAS

    Modus Operandi

    1. 01The app or group advertises paid daily tasks with a visible in-app wallet balance that grows with each completed task.
    2. 02At a set point, the system claims a randomly assigned "combo" task costs more than the current balance.
    3. 03A deposit is required to "complete the combo" before any withdrawal is permitted.
    4. 04Further combos or fees repeat the same pattern, and the balance is never actually released.

    Red Flags

    • A wallet balance you can see but cannot withdraw without paying in first.
    • "Combo" or "frozen order" messages that only resolve with a deposit.
    • No customer support outside the same task group chat.
    • Referral bonuses pushed harder than the actual task pay.
  • CASE CRYPTO

    Modus Operandi

    1. 01A group or "mentor" advertises consistent, fixed returns from crypto or forex trading, often shown through screenshots of past payouts.
    2. 02New members are encouraged to start small, and early withdrawals are honored to build confidence.
    3. 03Members are pushed to deposit larger amounts and recruit others, since new deposits are what fund existing payouts.
    4. 04Withdrawals slow, then stop, usually blamed on a "system upgrade" or regulatory issue, shortly before the group disappears.

    Red Flags

    • Fixed or "guaranteed" daily returns — real trading and investing carry risk and variable returns.
    • Pressure to recruit others as a condition of higher payouts.
    • No independently verifiable trading license, fund registration, or audited track record.
    • Sudden platform downtime or excuses right as large numbers of members try to withdraw.
  • CASE EXTSIM

    Modus Operandi

    1. 01An SMS or email impersonating a bank warns of suspicious activity and links to a page designed to look like the real login screen.
    2. 02The fake page collects login details, card information, and BVN under the guise of "verifying" the account.
    3. 03Collected details are used to attempt a SIM swap or directly authorize transactions, often timed for when the victim is least likely to notice.

    Red Flags

    • A bank-branded message urging immediate action through a link rather than the official app.
    • A login page URL that does not exactly match the bank's real domain.
    • Any page or call asking for your BVN, full card number, or OTP directly.
    • Unexpected loss of phone signal shortly after clicking a suspicious link.
  • CASE TASKBA

    Modus Operandi

    1. 01Recruitment starts with an unsolicited message advertising easy pay for small daily online tasks.
    2. 02Early payouts are genuinely small but real, to build trust in the platform.
    3. 03Once trust is established, the platform claims a "VIP" or bulk task tier requires the user to deposit funds first.
    4. 04Withdrawals stall behind new fees or requirements once a large deposit has been made, and the account is eventually locked.

    Red Flags

    • Any job that asks you to pay in before you can be paid out.
    • Payout tiers that keep requiring a bigger deposit to "unlock".
    • No registered company name, and support only reachable through a personal chat handle.
    • Pressure to recruit friends into the same task group for referral bonuses.
  • CASE EXTCRY

    Modus Operandi

    1. 01An app or website closely mimics a well-known crypto exchange's branding and interface.
    2. 02Users are directed to deposit crypto or fiat to begin trading on the platform.
    3. 03The interface shows a convincingly rising balance regardless of real market movement.
    4. 04Withdrawal requests are blocked by an escalating series of fees, taxes, or identity checks that never actually release funds.

    Red Flags

    • An exchange app not listed on official app stores or not matching the real exchange's verified domain.
    • A balance that only ever goes up regardless of market conditions.
    • Any fee required specifically to "unlock" or "process" a withdrawal.
    • Customer support that only exists inside the app itself, with no independent contact method.
  • CASE FAKEJO

    Modus Operandi

    1. 01Contact arrives as an unsolicited message offering a well-paid remote position with minimal qualifications required.
    2. 02A short, informal interview over chat replaces any real vetting process.
    3. 03The candidate is told they are hired, then asked to pay for equipment, a background check, or training material before starting.
    4. 04After payment, onboarding stalls indefinitely or the recruiter stops responding.

    Red Flags

    • A job offer that arrives before any application was submitted.
    • Any request to pay for training, equipment, or a background check as a new hire.
    • A company with no verifiable website, registration, or independent employee reviews.
    • Interviews conducted entirely over chat, never a call or video meeting.
  • CASE EXTROM

    Modus Operandi

    1. 01A relationship is built over time on a dating app, with the partner presenting as financially successful.
    2. 02The partner introduces a specific trading app or platform they claim generates reliable profit.
    3. 03The victim is walked through creating an account and making an initial deposit, sometimes seeing a fake rising "balance" in-app.
    4. 04When the victim tries to withdraw, the platform demands a tax, fee, or "unlock" payment, and the partner becomes unreachable soon after.

    Red Flags

    • A romantic partner who introduces a specific investment or trading platform.
    • An in-app balance that grows but cannot be withdrawn without an extra payment.
    • A trading platform not linked to any recognized, regulated brokerage.
    • The partner deflecting or avoiding a video call throughout the relationship.
  • CASE SIMSWA

    Modus Operandi

    1. 01Personal details are gathered beforehand, often through phishing links, data leaks, or social engineering.
    2. 02Those details are used to impersonate the victim at a telecom point of sale and request a replacement SIM for the number.
    3. 03Once the number is active on the attacker's device, they use it to receive one-time passcodes for banking and fintech apps.
    4. 04Funds are moved out quickly across multiple accounts before the victim regains control of their line.

    Red Flags

    • Your phone suddenly loses network signal with no explanation, especially after being asked for personal details.
    • Unexpected "SIM registration" or "number reactivated" SMS notifications you did not request.
    • OTP messages arriving for logins or transactions you did not initiate.
    • Any unsolicited call asking to "verify" your SIM, BVN, or bank details.
